Bad Publicity |
An object lesson in how to stage, and how NOT to stage, a publicity photo designed to express tension, suspense and outright fear.
Exhibit A |
"Dark City" (1950), Hestons maiden voyage as a film star, alongside Liz Scott. These results are favorable: an expressionistic sense of menace confronted with dramatic aplomb.
Exhibit B |
The going is a little LESS successful here, as the menace inside Dark City appears to inspire you to make googly expressions and break into a run directly away from the studio wall two feet behind you.
Exhibit C |
And finally, the bookend to every famous macho image of Heston: The Three Stooges themselves could scarcely provide better comic highlights than this, a shot intended to convey the gripping fear that seizes the mind inside the labyrinth of Dark City. Instead these guys look more like three goofballs playing ding-dong ditch, running from a flaming bag of poop burning on the porch.
Catch this rare title onscreen at Cinematheque's Noir Fest 5 in April!
